Research Community
A lot of work has been done over the years at PIE, and new research projects should consider the large amount of existing data. You can take advantage of our publication list, data catalog, and previous proposals to get a sense of the previous research that has been conducted. For novel work, conversations should take place with you, your PI, the Lead PI, and other PIs involved in that area. It is also very useful to speak with the Information Manager during the development stages to incorporate a data management plan into your proposal.
We highly encourage all PIE researchers to join us on Slack to engage in conversations with other PIE researchers and to keep up-to-date with events and news at PIE and the broader LTER network. Attending the annual meeting is also a great way to meet and network with other PIE researchers.
All undergraduate, graduate, and postdoc research projects should be developed in consultation with your advisor. You should also speak with Anne Giblin (Lead PI), Risa McNellis (Information Manager), and Sam Kelsey (Lead Field Technician) prior to beginning any research at PIE. It may also be useful to reach out to the sub-committee involved in your area of research to see how your project might integrate with existing work.
Please reach out to DEI or Education and Outreach Committee leads. You can also get involved with our partner organizations, listed on the Education & Outreach pages.
We are always accepting research highlights to feature on our website. If you would like to have your research featured, please send a short, plain-language summary of your project to pie_im@mbl.edu. Make sure to include a nice photo! You can also include links to related publications or presentations.
Field Work
The basics include a dry bag, water bottles, boots or waders, a light raincoat or windbreaker, lunch or snacks, sunscreen, and bug repellant. For more details about our facilities and a suggested packing list, see our Field Station User Guide.
Groups are responsible for their own safety. Group leaders should have emergency contact information, knowledge of medical issues, a first aid kit, and a field safety plan unique to their institution. We have a field safety plan template available for groups to fill out. Read more about field safety on the Guide for Researchers page.
Marshview Farm has two lab facilities available for researchers to use in the field. MBL lab facilities may also be available on a case-by-case basis. Contact PIE Facilities to inquire.
Housing at PIE is available on a first-come, first-serve basis with priority going to PIE staff and projects. More information about requesting housing can be found on the Guide for Researchers page.
You can e-mail PIE Facilities and we will respond as soon as possible.
In order to use the PIE boats, you must complete an online boat training and an in-person training. Boat use cannot conflict with PIE staff use. Read more about boat use on the Guide for Researchers page.
